This is a game changer folks. Mark my words. Being able to send gestural data captured from your kinect to another device via your computer over IR is incredible. You can send gesture recognition data to any piece of hardware that uses IR signals such as your Television, Receiver, Cable Box or X-10 controlers. Anything that reads IR signals can now be controlled by simply using gestures to interface with these devices.
The developer wrote custom code that works with his Kinect sensor plugged into his Mac Mini and the USB-UIRT plugged in as well. The code is integrated with OpenNI which detects the users skeleton and has specific gestures pre-programmed to control his TV in order to turn it off and on along with changing the volume on his digital receiver. Other gestures include the ability to change to the next and previous channel.
Amazing work Harishankar. For more you can follow his blog here
UPDATE - Source code is now available on GitHub

Isn't the remote easier to use? You might punch someone in the face like that if you're trying to turn off the pron real quick...
The post was intended to showcase the tech and let potential Kinect enthusiasts know that it's out there. Not to overshadow the good ol' fashioned remote control for our everyday "pron" requirements.
Requires you to sit "rock still" while you watch telly if you don't want to accidentally change channel or blow away those next door. Just like the "gesture controlled radio" in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. DON'T THROW ANY PENS!!!
Hm, well, so you could theoretically send "gesture commands" to Lego Mindstorm creations or some IR controlled Quadrocopters?
Anything IR. This will really get interesting once finger and finger tip detection is more robust. The main concern for most people is having to sit still while devices are on. If Kinect can detect two or three particular fingers touching or an abstract "gang sign" type hand position you could easily control devices multiple in your home.
My dream is becoming real, point at my cable box to take control of it, point at my amp, my TV, the lights. The ultimate remote.
This is definitely the start of that entire concept. Best believe I'll be keeping an eye on how this develops. Screw looking around for extra batteries! Am I right?
