Using Kinect With Your PS3

Using Kinect With Your PS3

A tutorial posted on Shantanugoel tech blog indicates how you can use your Microsoft Kinect sensor with a PS3. Oh the sweet irony. For PS3 fans out there that don't feel the Move is quite up to par or just wanted to see what the Kinect was all about, you can now take Microsofts controller free solution for a spin on your PS3.

As the developers original post refrences, the software is at a pre-apha quality state meaning that some libraries need to be improved in order to boost performance and features, but it's definitely a start none the less.

For a full walkthrough on setting this up, you can read the tutorial posted at tech.shantanugoel.com or feast your eyes on the video demonstration he's put together.

I for one vow that I will have this working and will provide my own video demo in the near future along with a step-by-step guide as well.

In the meantime, if you'd like to try it out yourself, you'll need:

OpenNI Libraries
NITE Libraries
PrimeSense Libraries for Kinect
diyps3controller

installed on a Linux machine. A wealth of information can be found at openkinect.org

Coming Soon/ToDo

-Full Menu and Game profiles

- Skeletal tracking for better game profiles

- Switching back to menu profiles from game profiles

- Easier way to specify user custom profiles instead of changing code for the same

- Performance improvement for game profiles

Use Kinect With Your PS3

Such a long load time for the PS3 :(

That'd be cool if you could "swipe" the XMB instead.

I actually started with using swipes in the XMB but the swipe detector in NITE is pathetically broken, working only 1/3rd of the time and lot of false positives. So, switched to a 2d slider mechanism. May do my own swipe detection some time later.
