Check out this video demonstration provided by IDEO Labs that has a very precise detection algorithm in terms of applying physics to the silhouette of a users tracked skeleton. You can see how minute blocks are able to squeeze into tight spaces but never penetrate the outline.

The programmer describes his work in the following manner:

Prototype of dynamic filtering depth information from Microsoft Kinect for robust silhouette extraction and prototyping of physical interfaces using openFrameworks.
